Pastels can be unforgiving and difficult to work with, and I speak from experience. I love how the swirls of the pastels shows movement of the drumsticks, the glee on the drummer's face, the space-look in the background, and the color and shimmer of the drums. Good control of the pastels for the look in the jeans and t-shirt. Just cool.

Description

Ya know, I realized recently that I never got around to putting anything that I did in my high school fine art classes up on DA. I kept meaning to...and kept forgetting. So here's one of them.

This was one of my favorite ideas, favorite pieces to work on, and favorite project outcomes of my entire senior year. The image hit me pretty randomly one day while listening to Switchfoot's "Stars" (hence the title). I really liked the idea, but was actually pretty hesitant to put it on paper because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get it to look the way I wanted, especially since I'd decided that the best medium I could use for it was chalk pastel, which I really never worked with much. Regardless, after putting it off for awhile, I eventually sat down and gave it a try. And it worked out pretty well.

The original (which is hanging in my room) isn't quite this vibrant; I had to play with it some in Photoshop since I was working from a photograph instead of a scan. I just wound up brightening it some in the process. Somehow it still manages to look better in real life, but traditional work usually does :P

I'm a drummer in real life, which is where the basic inspiration to do this came from (in fact I took a photo of my own drumset to reference from), but the character involved here is actually Jet from the Unemployed Angels plotline. He's super energetic and fun to draw, so he fit this pic really well XD.

Aaaannnyway, I'm gonna start getting those other art class pics up soon. Several of them I'd actually like to sell, since they're all matted and backed and hangable anyway, and are presently just collecting dust in my room :P Be on the lookout for those.

As for the ones I'm not selling the originals of, as well as a few other deviations in my gallery, I'm going to start offering as prints. Mostly just in case anyone wants them; I'm not expecting to make much off of it. But I figure it can't hurt to have the option there.

So yeah. Enjoy.

EDIT: Jesus, a daily dev?! O_o Wow. Seriously, I'm legitimately shocked. But, thank you!! =3

Just for the record though, those of you coming in because of the DD, this looks a hell of a lot better in real life. And looking back on it now, a year after it was drawn, it's still certainly got problems. There's better, newer stuff in my gallery; albeit not pastel work. Still. I encourage the checking out of my other art; this isn't that great an example XD.
